What is Raman Spectroscopy?

  • Spectroscopy studies the interaction of electromagnetic waves and materials. Raman spectroscopy studies the properties of materials by the observation of the change of vibrational states of materials. It uses monochromatic light as excitation source. Most of the incident monochromatic light scatters elastically (Rayleigh scattering), but very small portion of the light leads the material to a virtual state for a very short time, then scatters immediately with lower or higher frequencies. The former is called Stokes scattering and the latter, anti-Stokes scattering. It occurs when the polarizabilities of molecules change during the vibrational transition by the excitation light. These properties are characteristic for each material. Through Raman spectra, materials not only can be identified, but also give the information of both physical and chemical changes.
